Servier signs agreement with non-profit association La Chaîne de l'Espoir and announces creation of the Mécénat Servier endowment fund

Suresnes, France - 8 November, 2016

Today, the Servier Group, which has always been involved in philanthropic initiatives, is formalising its commitment to sponsor these initiatives with the creation of the Mécénat Servier endowment fund. Its aim is to sponsor projects related to health, innovation and creation, in both France and abroad, based on values it cherishes, especially education and community. Its partnership with La Chaîne de l'Espoir is the first illustration of this.

The partnership between Servier and La Chaîne de l'Espoir is the culmination of an ongoing joint project. with the financial backing of Servier, which resulted in the setting up of a cardiology department at Phnom Penh Hospital in Cambodia. Today, Servier and La Chaîne de l'Espoir, which share the same values and expertise in the field of cardiology, are signing a new 3-year agreement for the training of local medical and administrative teams at the Dakar Cuomo Cardiopaediatric Centre in Senegal. which will open in January.

This ambitious project will help address the extreme lack of suitable healthcare for children with heart problems in the region. The Cuomo Centre will not only extend cardiological treatment and heart surgery to children in Senegal, but also throughout West Africa which, up until now, has been totally devoid of this type of facility. In Africa, 30,000 children have serious heart disease and nearly 1000 children are born each year with congenital heart disease requiring specialised treatment.

The project has 3 main aspects: construction, equipment and training. The 2,200 square metre centre, scheduled to open at the end of 2016, will contain technical equipment for new emergency, in-patient and out-patient departments. In addition to the centre itself, Servier will also fund training, by Chaîne de l'Espoir's most qualified personnel, of teams of local practitioners in specific techniques of cardiac surgery. Moreover, administrative teams will be trained to manage the centre with the aim of achieving financial sustainability. Support will be provided until these teams are ready to work on their own.

Finally, a children's home will be added to the centre so that the children from the poorest families can receive both medical care and social support.
